In April 2025, MGA Thermal commissioned a first-of-its-kind steam‑integrated thermal battery at its Tomago facility in Australia. This 5 MWh demonstration plant was a key milestone in the commercialisation of MGA Thermal’s next-generation technology, proving that renewable energy can be stored and dispatched as high-grade process heat - reliably, affordably, and at scale. This project received $3.75m from ARENA.

How we Deliver

Our Business Model

MGA Thermal is a specialised Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). We are the technical authority on the design of the ETES system and we manufacture and supply our proprietary MGA Blocks. 

MGA Thermal partners with global engineering procurement construction companies (EPC) to deliver the turnkey scope. The EPC is the lead contractor responsible for detailed engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning. MGA Thermal will remain engaged throughout project delivery as the specialist ETES OEM.  

MGA Thermal also partners with developers and energy service companies to deliver projects under alternative commercial models, including an innovative, zero customer capex, Heat-as-a-Service solution.

Research & Development

MGA Thermal was founded on more than a decade of advanced materials science research at the University of Newcastle.

Today, research and development remains a core part of our identity. Our laboratories underpin rigorous in-house quality control, while our scientists’ ongoing research focuses on the next-generation of thermal storage materials. This ensures that MGA Thermal’s technology will continue to deliver reliable, sustainable process heat to customers at the lowest cost.

Manufacturing

We manufacture MGA Blocks at our Australian facility using a production process engineered for reliability, repeatability, productivity, and stringent quality assurance. We are scaling our manufacturing capacity to meet growing customer demand, supporting industrial scale thermal storage projects.

Project Delivery

MGA Thermal’s engine room is an exceptional team of engineers and project managers, collectively bringing years of experience in executing complex industrial and engineering projects. This in-house expertise is complemented by the experience and expertise of our engineering and EPC partners, to ensure seamless integration and reliable operation of our ETES solution on live brownfield client sites.
