200 MWh Tronox Project
MGA Thermal has commenced a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study for a 200 megawatt-hour electro‑thermal energy storage (ETES) project at Tronox, the global chemicals and mining company. The project - Australia’s largest industrial‑scale thermal storage initiative - is being developed in Kwinana, WA by Australian company Knode, with GHD as engineering partner.
Co‑funded by a $2.9 million agreement with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), the FEED study builds on a Pre‑Feasibility Study completed in August 2025, which confirmed that MGA Thermal’s ETES technology can achieve price parity with traditional fossil‑fuel systems.
Targeting commercial operation in 2028, the project will deliver approximately 20 tonnes per hour of renewable steam to Tronox’s Kwinana facility under a Heat-as-a-Service agreement. The initial deployment is expected to avoid 38,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, with the potential to fully eliminate fossil‑fuel use if deployed at scale.
